Rules for Students Mobility in the EU

Project Description (Idea, Motivation, Content)

The students are exploring different areas that might be problematic to a full implementation of mobility in education and that may deter a mobile youth. Through case studies and more general investigations, we hope to present the realities of higher education abroad. The results of this investigation will be presented, and the students will suggest solutions to these problems.

To enable to students to see the bigger picture, five schools have worked with issues within this theme:
Their collaborative efforts will result in a film, which will show core issues in student mobility. This film will be used as the main material of the workshop, led by students from all five schools.

Project Aim

In this age of globalization, countries and communities become dependent on cultural flexibility. As expressed by the European Union, and as understood by the five schools in this project, mobility in education is an integral part in achieving this. By working with this theme, the students will become aware of the international possibilities available to them as they set out to pursue their dreams.

Participating in this project (the preparation of the project and the participation at the youth conference) will also increase the students’ perception of the workings of democracy in European countries and in the European Union, thus preparing them for a future as active citizens in a global society.

Project Procedure (who, what, when, how)

The project was outlined at the [ABC Network] meeting in Vienna in December 2005. The vanguard of teachers and students who attended the meeting then returned to their respective schools to define the topic to suit each school and region.

The first two months of the spring term were spent seeking and collecting data. The Hungarian school and the Swedish school both invited lecturers from the regional universities who spoke with the students about mobility in general, e.g. the Bologna process, foreign scholarships. The focus of the schools’ work differs slightly; some of the schools have chosen to work with case studies whereas some schools are aiming to produce general information regarding the regulations that rule mobility on paper and in practice.

Having completed the information gathering process, the month of March left the students busy analyzing their results, finalizing the products and commencing the production of the film. The film will include interviews with students who share their views and experiences of mobility and studying abroad. By the end of March, the sequences produced by the respective schools will be put together and edited by the students at ITgymnasiet i Skövde. The students will then plan the workshop through the yahoo discussion group set up by the Slovak school for this project.
